Morning all,

Having a bit of an issue with the ATR at the moment have asked over on the ATR forum still unsure. Things have been a tad busy of late and not had an ounce of a chance to start digging into the car itself.

When starting up mainly in the mornings and after work the car is pretty spluttery to say the least. Revs low and kind of feels like its about to cut out. Leave for a couple of seconds and she is all good no issues. Same if I open the throttle a little. Have noticed when opening the throttle though there is some smoke coming out the back end.

Otherwise runs great (fans need looked at as they are not kicking in)

Been told its likely the head on its way out anyone able to confirm?

You could start simple and spray a load of carb cleaner directly into the throttle body, revving as you do so. Might just need a bit of a de-coke.

before worrying too much about the head or other major components - get a compression tester.

If the compression is low or uneven or results give cause for concern then you've likely got bigger problems.

Anything on the ignition side its likely solve able by replacing general service components that have probably never been done (cap/arm/leads/plugs , possibly coil, not expensive). People are generally more interested in mods than service parts.

I've normally experienced the opposite of what you describe with worn out cap/arm. Starts up fine when cold, but as the car warms up, the ignition side would break down and misfire. The cap and arm were about 30 years old in that case and very corded. Car would conk out, then back fire through the inlet lol.

Will see if I get time this weekend. Thought when you got older you had more time seems its not that way.

Got some spare Leads and a spare dizzy although it will need cleaned as was in a lot of oil when I bought the car.

The starting isn't an issue or the running after this first thing so that's why I doubted the head.

We cleared some unevenness in our previous ATR simply by taking it on a freaking insane drive with a tank of v-power.
As above, moisture is a possible culprit. Make sure your rotor arm and dizzy cap terminals are nice and clean.

Ive had exact same problems on a couple old honda's before. Either a good clean of the IACV or a replacement sorted the problem. I had the same problem on my Toyota too where depending on outside temp it would be ok after 10-20 seconds of giving a little bit of throttle. That also turned out to be the IACV. So it would be the best place to star for your ATR in my opinion. Thanks :)
