The 1.9 Pd130 engine on the passat ended with the b5.5 the 2005 onwards passats have either a 1.9 pd 105 engine which is not the most refined engine but is extremely reliable. Or a 2.0 140/170 tdi engine. These are supposedly not as reliable but are a bit quicker /quieter. There's not much difference in the mpg between the. I currently have a b5.5 Pd130 passat estate and it has been reliable. Currently on 223k and still flys about. Just bought the wife a 1.9 pd105 touran which goes quite well. I think what I'm trying to say is the 1.9 b6 passat would be my choice.

It's a pity you've set the dates where they are, or I would have suggested a Peugeot 406 estate.

We went to look at one years ago. It was immaculate, but had well over 200,000 miles on the clock. The dealer said he was going to give it another week and then if there were no takers in the UK, he'd move it on to Nigeria to work as a taxi. That might just have been a reliability endorsement!

Been down the PSA discussion with LLL already - he doesn't like Torx :D

Ref the Accord  I seem to recall there's a common problem with the timing chain tensioner on that accord engine? thebusofwoe will probably be able to say better.
Also...  Does Drax have one???
GJMHONDA2012 had one, but petrol?

yeah, no french car will ever darken my door.

I was wondering about the accord engine as honda didnt start putting diesel into cars until quite late in the game i reckon.

I know the CDTI engine in the Civic's were a Vauxhall block as far as I was aware ran timing chain that didn't need to be changed unless you got a warning light. They were still a decent engine and im sure these were the same as the ones in the Accord.

Yeah they where, and I was reticent when Dad decided to make the switch to Diesel Honda.

If you where looking for one then you'd want the next and final gen.

Here's how it looked back then:

To drive it was lovely, typical Honda gear change, suspension seemed to get the right level of firm and comfort and it was an effortless cruiser, though it proved more than enough fun when driving east to west on the A66.
Not sure which diesel variant it had, or the engine code but it was 2.2 CTDi. Previously drove the 2.4/2.3l, (can't recall), petrol variant, and I did like the torque in the diesel, didn't feel like I had to work the engine as hard. As far as I was concerned it pulled nicely, needless to say Dad may have got around 50mpg, but I might have been a bit lead footed so faired in the mid 40's
Always took the keys off Dad to drive it.

yes i have an 2005 accord 2.2 diesel, really lovely car, quick, reliable, good looking, very comfy but not fantastic on MPG for long motorway miles, around 45-50mpg

the wife also has a 2009 VW Passat 2.0 diesel we picked up for about 2k, brilliant car and more fuel efficient also not quite as good looking as the accord ;)

@drax yeah its not as pretty but economy is king when starting business. Im going to go test drive both in the coming weeks and see which feels right. I like the honda but still the passat seems the 'sensible' choice..

Yea the Accord 2.2 does suffer quite a lot with issues. I personally hate the bloody engine. I’d personally go with a VW. Bearing in mind I’ve worked with Honda’s for the last 11 years. The newer Honda Diesels are brilliant. The i-Ctdi however not so. ;)
