Orange peel works.
Wifey hates spiders too so for months we had bits of orange peel around the house. Ain't seen spiders for some time now! I'm sure any citrus fruit peel would work tbh.
A sensible way to do this though would be to Hoover up the cobwebs and start spraying the walls etc. with citrus scent
