Anybody had high HP FWD? 400 ish + ?

Post by Mudgey » Mon Apr 21, 2014 7:40 pm

Hello,

The power bug has hit & I am on a quest to get more power out of my Lude. The problem now is all about driveability and which power adder is the way forward. I think Turbo has to be the easiest way to get big power but I am concerned about whether the massive torque spike would upset the handling of the car & whether I'd miss how controllable the engine is with the supercharger. Has anybody ever driven or owned a big power turbo FWD car and how did you get on with it?

Cheers!

i was running with crap tyres but whatever gear i booted it in as soon as the turbo came in it wheel span but when it got traction it went like a rocket .

My friend has a tad under 400hp in his carburettor turbo charger Renault 5. It's very impressive, it's very scary it's a small old chassis. You do the math.

Actually it's riciculous but he LOVES it.

As long as you have the correct tyres, brakes, suspension gearbox and not to mention MAP.. 400BHP is a piece of cake for a fwd car ;)

Mate of mine has a Focus RS in the high 400s. He said the key was have a map switch ;) thing was insane and actually wasn't too much of a monster so long as it was dry. But yes being able to switch between a 'sensible' 350bhp map and whatever it was his max was nice.

Working for fiat for as long as I have, ive done a fair bit of work on coupe 20v turbo's. Ive driven a couple of 400 bhp plus motors and have to agree with lucas, if the brakes, suspension etc has been done properly then they can handle it fine. Ive also driven a 380 bhp coupe with no other work done and it was constantly trying to attack the scenery.

its the same with any fwd car the best mods on a fwd car is the chassis first so you can actually use the power you have so on a car that has a good chassis to start with it doesn't take much to tweek it to handle more power.
