Karma and a loose crank pulley

Hey guys

Its been a while since I posted here so I figured id give you an update on what happened on the weekend.

The lesson here is Karma comes back and bites you in the ass!!!

Last week as a joke I posted on facebook that my car has died and I brought an Astra as an interim run around until I figured out what I needed to do. Everyone knows how much I love my lude so I got a lot of responses from people who were being supportive.

I posted later in the day that I was joking and that I went to London to pick up a car my cousin had purchased.

So this leads me onto last Friday evening. I was driving down the M6 coming back to Brum from Wolverhampton. A nice looking Astra VXR decided it wanted to play so I obliged. Road works were taking place so only 1 lane was open. He was in front gave it the beans and took off... to my surprise the top end of the lude kept me in the game.

Anyway I turn off on my exit and do the obligatory flash of lights to show respect. During the time of the little play on the road I had my music up really loud.

I'm close to my house now and decide to turn the music down to hear a very funny sound coming from the engine. Its near 1 am so I park up and think I will worry about this tomorrow.

I woke up in the morning and called breakdown and the guy tells me I have a loose crank pulley which has caused the belt to slip.

Luckily I called Matt at Red R @cutz - who helped me diagnose the issue. Its a loose bolt which has caused the crank pulley to come loose.

I hope I haven't caused much damage to the engine.......

The moral of the story is... Don't joke about your lude dying... If its running, count your blessings and never ever make a joke about it!!!

Yeah Matt was telling me about this everyday whilst I dropped off my lude for a major service and a new clutch.

Good job its just a lose bolt, you got it sorted now then?

It's crazy tho as I've tried to get Crank bolts off and there almost impossible without a impact gun! :lol:

Has anyone else apart from the breakdown guy looked at it? It is possible for the bolt to come loose but I would say that it is a stronger chance of the rubber ring in the crank pulley giving out, the crank pulley then separates.

It is much easier (and cheaper) to get a new bolt and woodruff key than a crank pulley.

@merlin- no not yet buddy. Will get it looked at this weekend. If its the rubber ring, will I need that as well as a new bolt and a woodruff key.

Im really hoping this doesn't turn into a drama.......

If it is the rubber that has failed on the crank pulley the whole unit is goosed. This is what happened to my 5th gen.

There is one on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-ACCORD- ... SwHMJYLZLc

If it is this that has failed the woodruff key and crank bolt should be unaffected and reusable. If you haven't changed your auxiliary belts this is a good time to get new ones.

The center part of the pulley (where the bolt clamps the pulley to the end of the crank) will not move while the outer part of the pulley wobbles around. You should be able to put your arm down through the top of the engine bay and have a feel (not when the engine is running though ;) :D )

You can see the rubber ring separating the two parts of the pulley in this pic;

ive had a crank pulley bolt come loose when i was driving - had to get a tow from @Merlin and this caused the rear suspension on his car to collapse on one side :lol: (it was an old fiat punto)
got it fixed ok ;)

cutz has the right tools to fix your lude 8-)
