Well I figured the a/c probably deserved some tlc, so I've booked it in with a local guy who will give it the antibacterial treatment and re-gas it, as I think its low. £60, so not bad.
He says his system will tell him which gas it needs (there's a new substitute for the older one) but does anyone know for certain which one it will be? Just figured its handy info to have in case.

OK. nothing to see here!
All sorted now, just by way of some info for future readers:
The guy tested the coolant in the system and it turned out to be R12 - the old type.
Since this is no longer used, there is an equivalent, made by Dupont I believe?
Our air-con uses 650g of coolant, however, the guy put in 590g. He said this is because the new R12 equiv is that much more efficient, that just filling it to max could blow the seals etc fairly quickly, reckons this is the mistake a lot of basic garages make as they use an automatic machine. He did say if they were that good he would have one, as they are a lot cheaper?!.....
Anyway, before it was 12.1 degrees, after it's 3.8 degrees and smells sweeeeeeet
