When you notify the insurance about the incident, tell them straight up that you don't want the car written off, and that you'd prefer a cheque to repair it yourself as you have access to a supply of parts (ie us lot here). Number of times I see notes added to people's history on their motorbike insurance saying the same thing and they're insuring the same bike 2 years later, not been written off.
Had one customer with a very similar accident, ruined all the fairings on his bike (over a grand for the fairing alone unpainted!!) as he got knocked off and bent the handlebars. 3 months after his old policy with us had ended, he phoned me and wanted to restart the insurance, and he had a note on his file saying "customer has informed us that he does not want the bike to be written off as we advised it would be. Instead he is going to streetfighter the bike". So instead of a £2500 claim that would have meant a write off, he spent £50 on some new handlebars and that was it. Generally speaking, if you want to save an insurance company money (be it yours or a third party's company), they're not going to complain.
