My mate at work swears by his P-reg 3 door 1.5 vtec-e civic. Not sure how much they are but I'm sure its in the lower part of your budget now, if you can find one. Its got a green light that comes on when its warmed up & ur driving it sensibly (70 on motorway) to show its in 'Econo-mode!' He's been getting 50-55mpg as he's happy to sit at those speeds, no huge acceleration etc. Honda years ahead as usual! (altho if that diesel lude ca

Another vote here for the rover 75. My dad paid about £1700 for an 04 estate, MINT, owned by a guy from the BBC who just changed it because he 'had a thing about 100k miles' LOL. It's lovely to drive, and he gets anything up to about 60mpg :o (on the motorway, doing about 60-65, mind)
Pulls really well, timing chain not belt, as said 5 series running gear.
I genuinely considered selling the Mrs aerodeck to get one, lots and lots of car for little money.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - RUN LPG! Then it doesn't matter what car you have when the fuel is cheaper than Coca-Cola..!

Volvo S60 D5. Fully loaded armchair missile.

Or you couldn't go wrong with the like's of a Mk4 Golf GT TDi or a 2001 facelift Passat TDi etc.

Its not alot of miles to warrant needing a diesel, but i myself would rather do it in a comfy tdi barge that has a bit shove.

I was tempted with one of these at one point just because I thought they were priced well.

Alfa Romeo 147 JTD?

Or how about a Citroen AX diesel as a throwaway item? You could get 4 or 5 of them for your budget!
