So what we're saying is the extra 5% of sidewall height changes the ride quality by a noticeable amount? Is that right?

Well I imagine if I had an extra 5% my Mrs would notice a difference in ride quality

In all seriousness though I've never run 215/40 and 215/45 back-to-back so couldn't say from experience, but the science behind it makes sense.

Its not just the ride quality. Its how the suspension works. Tyre wall is part of the suspension design and the camber curve, caster and scrub radius and all design around a 4" sidewall or the stock 205/50.

Changing that changes the way the suspension works. Some people use skinny tyres for track to suit their needs but the Prelude is designed for road use.

That's cool and it makes sense - does it still hold true even though I don't have standard suspension?

You probably have more standard parts than aftermarket ;)

Oh yeah for sure, but the aftermarket suspension parts that I do have (shocks and springs) are going to have some effect on the handling of my car compared to an OEM one as the ride height is lower and the spring rate is higher, so I'm wondering, in that instance, will that 5% in question have as much impact on my car as it would on one running full OEM suspension?

I know I'm labouring this point and I'm sorry if I'm being a gentleman's sausage but I'm about to spend over £400 on tyres and would like to make as much of an informed choice as possible.

I don't blame you, £400 isn't back pocket change. The truth is though I'm probably being more annoying than helpful, as usual

Generally, the lower the profile, the harder the ride. You might get a bit more bump steer and tramlining on the worst bits of our dear old roads, but you mightn't even notice it on smooth tarmac.
