I've driven a 1st gen pre-facelift demonstrator quite a bit - They drive ok but they're not fast. The handling is pretty good however and the hybrid lump means you get low down torque so the power delivery is fairly consistent across the rev range. Definitely not a 'sports' car though. jobby all space inside because the hybrid battery is in the rear end and it's a small car to start with. Would be an ok car for the mrs or something I guess.
Oh and they lose money like mad apparently - I remember my dealer principal didn't like us taking people on test drives in the demo unless we had a good chance of a sale, because he wanted to try and keep the mileage as low as possible for when we inevitably had to sell it. But then again any new motors body lemonade out money in terms of depreciation, I think the concern was that the CR-Z also suffers from a small audience of buyers which exacerbates the issue.
If I had the money for a used CR-Z, I'd go and buy a good condition 2nd gen CR-X VTEC instead
