Toyotas, Mitsubishis etc will all carry a few extra insurance groups, so no better off than a Honda. At least i have a reasonable knowledge of Hondas, so can teach the boys something.

Been watching your build thread Lucas. I'd have to resist the temptation to modify it though :(

My misses had a Mitsubishi Colt 1.3 glx for her first car, looked alright, we put aftermarket wheels on it. Her insurance was £800 for her first year driving.

Something like this would be ideal, but Leicester is a bit far away - http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-moto ... to-content

Insurance on a low group car will be circa £2.5k or more

If i insure it legitimately in my name using my NCB with him noted as the main driver, rate is more like £1.4k.

God knows what the rates will be like in a year or so!

How about a civic saloon? I imagine they may be cheaper because they are less 'boy racer'.

Is there any mileage in going for an older Honda in terms of lower insurance?

Older models tend to be higher rated due to NCAP ratings and cost of parts, so what you gain in age of vehicle discount you lose in vehicle group rating.

Civic saloon? Are you on about the 5dr hatch that looks like a Rover 400?

Small cars just don't really rock me, they never have, but i quite like the EK shape 3 door Civic. I think i've convinced myself either a 1.4 Sport or the 1.5 Vtec. Just need to find a cheap one reasonably local to me.

These things? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... 6087193434 - I quite like them myself. Thanks to the MB6 there are a lot of nice yet subtle things that can be done 8-)

That's what the wife has, same standard alloys too. I do over a 1000 miles a month in it, and it's all very comfortable. It feels like a bigger car on the inside too.
