Looks like the classic Tegenaria species that make you jobby yourself when a huge one runs across the living room floor. The larger ones have a strong enough bite that you can feel it.

If it has a smoother looking body and a more definite contrast in colour between the abdomen and rest of its body then it might be Amaurobius.

Just guessing though, theres something like 600 species of spider in the UK. Feel any better now?

Yeah some of the Tegenaria get pretty big, biggest I've seen struggle to sit in a pint glass without body hitting the sides  Tegenaria atrica is a fast dancer, tried to scoop one on a sheet of A4 once and before I knew it it was up my arm and I got a bit hysterical

Dysdera crocata is silky/velvety looking (brick colour sort of) and has a decent bite also.

hahaha it's true, I have found some beefy spiders down here.. like Donald, I have found a few that won't fit under an upturned pint glass!

My friend and I put 3 big males in a Tupperware tub/make-do spider enclosure, they were fine on their own. We added a female and they all went mental! Two were fighting while the female looked on, in the meantime the 3rd male was stalking around the edge of the tub and sneaked up on the female from behind - ooh err, misses!
