Warning (magnetic sump plugs)

Ok so I don't own a Lude anymore but, I'm changing the oil on the CBR today and I drop the sump plug and let the oil drain.

I bugger off inside while the dreggs drip out and come back to refit and refill.

I wipe the grey/black sludge off the magnet, fit a new copper washer and wind the plug in by hand until it stops.

I always forget the torque setting so I check in the bible - 28nm which always sounds a huge amount for an aluminium sump.

My small torque wrench only goes up to 12nm which is all I've ever done it to + 1/4 turn and never had a leak.

So I start to turn and a rather loud click makes me pull a really daft face. All friction goes and the plug can be turned by hand.

Snapped, leaving half of the plug in the sump threads. Not the end of the world as a stud extractor will make mincemeat of it tomorrow now that I've removed the downpipes and the sump.

Don't buy cheap EBAY magnetic plugs. The original Honda one will now go back in its place.

My old Lude has one of these fitted @Indigolemon @Vanzep tell Duncan to beware next time he changes his oil and anyone who has one fitted.

I'm on my third since March 2007 - mine have a habit of rounding off. Think it's 'cos they're cheap / soft aluminium. My magnetic sump plug history:

March 2007, eBay, £4.88 + £2.00 P&P.
March 2010, Tegiwa Imports trading through eBay, £12.00 + £2.00 P&P.
July 2014, APS magnetic oil sump drain plug from JJC Race and Rally trading through eBay, £5.35.

Luckily I've had none fail like the above though, although it was quite a task removing the worn out Tegiwa Imports overpriced crappy sump plug - think I had to use mole grips to unscrew the fvcker.

Stick to the original, I say, if Honda thought it best to fit a magnetic one, they'd have fitted one as standard. (Hope the CBR recovers)

I've had Spoon magnetic sump & gearbox plugs fitted for over 6 years.
They've given me no problems in all that time.

I think I paid almost £30 for my magnetic sump plug

not used it yet though

Every time I've done an oil change recently I've replaced the sump plug each time, not sure why

I think I read somewhere that you're meant to but there's an equal chance I imagined it

I don't see why the plug should be changed each time. If it has a sealing washer, I can see a reason for renewing that.

I think it's the washer. Got my S2000 filter with a new washer included from Honda.

I have MFactory sump and gearbox plugs on my 4th gen. They seem pretty good but they weren't uber cheap.
