But what does the BLACK or RED icon on left of thread mean when it starts to scroll upwards?

If it scrolls it means it's busy - lots of posts in a short time.

But the scrolling RED meant its being edited

Scrolling black means it is busy and has been read by you.
Scrolling red means it is busy and is unread by you.
