I'm due to be going to Edinburgh in March and possibly Ayr too. Can anyone recommend any nice driving roads with good scenery? You know, like the type you see on Top Gear and car adverts. Preferably not too far from Edinburgh and Ayr.

There are plenty of good driving roads between Edinburgh and the Borders and i do like some sections of A71 which goes from Edinburgh to Ayrshire.
There are quite a few of us near Edinburgh so no worries about getting the lude out on some decent roads

Re: Good scenic roads in Scotland?
South of Edinburgh, the A7 from Gorebridge to Galashiels and then Hawick to Langholm used to be pretty good. I also (sort of) remember the B roads from Peebles across to the A708 and then down to Moffat as being fun. You could then go back to Edinburgh up the A701, which has some nice stretches.
Ayrshire's less well served by top roads, although we quite liked the short stretch between Sanquar and Crawfordjohn two years ago and the B road between Muirkirk and Strathaven.

The road between Spean Bridge and Newtonmore is pleasant enough - lots of corners, with a nice relaxing straight wide bit halfway along. Then down through Fort William, past Ben Nevis, and on through Ballachulish to Oban - detour via Gelncoe is rewarding if the weather's nice (i.e. anytime it's not not pishing rain with 20ft visibility).

I think as some have suggested there's some fun driving roads, but to be fair you're not going to see the big Top Gear / Car advert stuff in this part of Scotland. Sorry.CARRisma wrote:I'm due to be going to Edinburgh in March and possibly Ayr too. Can anyone recommend any nice driving roads with good scenery?
