Why would your bank lie to you about transactions? You think they're in on it?

They'd use your account to sell something stolen or misrepresented, that way the comeback is on you (at least momentarily).

Only if they get into your account though, if anything, this shows how important a decent password is. Speaking of which, if you use you Gumtree password anywhere else I suggest you go change it!

A common scam is to copy an advert off someone else, the fraudster will wait for the calls to come in, and will try to get the potential buyer to pay a deposit directly into a bank account in order to hold the item. The fraudster then dissappears.
