H22a5 engine upgrade advice
Hi there I'm new to this, just wanted to ask for some advice and info on what people think of the h22a5 engine / gearbox and what things I should out for too.. Also any good upgrades which will see me get a little more power and improve performance as looking into a rebuild. Engine is in my honda civic ej9 hope someone can help as finding it hard to find good reliable info, cheers in advance.

Welcome to LG!!!
What is the car used for? Is it a daily driver, just a bit of weekend fun, or for the track?
A cheap upgrade would be to replace the H22a5's M2V5 gearbox as it has a the longer 4.062 final drive. Swapping to a gearbox that has the 4.266 final drive will yield greater acceleration. An M2P4 or U2Q7 would be better still as they have shorter ratio's in 2nd and 3rd.

Do you have a tunable ECU?
Also, most importantly, what is your budget?

I was always told (I/H/E)

Re: H22a5 engine upgrade advice
Hi there thanks for your replies, the car is used for weekend driving and I'm looking into doing the occasional track days throughout the year to have a bit of fun with, I'm going for a fast road setup with it all.. Engine - want to rebuild this with new gaskets etc as it needs new stem seals as far as I know because it smokes a little tiny bit.. Iv been quoted 2500 for full rebuild, was going to get things ported and polished too, also I havnt got a tuneable ecu only a standard one, have been looking into those but don't want to spend thousands, looking at not a very big budget, around 3 grand for all.
Cheers, Grant.

If you've got £3k as a budget, you might like to consider swapping the A5 for an A7, along with the U2Q7 gearbox. There seem to be a few Accord Type Rs being broken at the moment, so you might pick up the parts reasonably easily.
(Someone should be along in a minute to say what the effect is on the ECU ...)

I say 3k but I'd rather not spend that ATM in one go, just was looking for options as if I keep the a5 it needs rebuilding.. How much is a a7 swap roughly? Are they much better than the a5? Differences? would you not rate the a5 very well? Apologies for all questions I'm struggling to find info haha.

In my experience, the A7 will give you an extra 20-30 bhp, and generally with a more noticeable vtec step. The lsd box is a bigger improvement, especially if you want to do some track days.
I've never priced up a swap like this, even though I quite fancy it, but I've seen decent A7 engines from around £700.
As to the A5 vs. A7 thing, I generally argue that our A7 ATR will see off our A5 Prelude on a track, but that the Lude is at least as handy in the real world. I've never driven a 5G Lude with an A8, so can't compare, but I wouldn't knock the A5: it's served us well over the last 3 years.

Re: H22a5 engine upgrade advice
Ok well that does defiantly sound like a better plan, actually swapping the a5 for the a7 especially as the a7 has the LSD gearbox, are there any common faults I should look for? Also I'm a bit weary of buying one as I don't want to end up buying it and having to rebuild that also :/ where should I look as eBay is easy but generally get some jobby buyers and parts off of there unfortunately.

Stuff comes up fairly frequently at http://www.accordr.org Some of us are members there, too, so might know a seller.
Don't discount the A8 + M2P4 box, though.

Is the a8 accord type r but newer version? And is the m2p4 box it's standard box? LSD? Guessing the a8 is bigger power and better than a7?
