Torque Wrench

Post by Sand » Thu Apr 09, 2015 1:45 pm

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a torque wrench. I have a budget of 30 pounds.

Halfords is out of my price range. Any advice on a beginner one (price, brand, graduation, length)? Do I need a 1/2 or a 3/8?

I also need an oil wrench. Which one is the best for a 5g lude (no VTEC)?

Thanks in advance

I would go with 1/2. You can use it as your 'big' wrench as well then.

I've got one from Aldi, it's ok for £16. Can't take the max torque (circa 250lb/ft) without breaking the ratchet tooth but can do most things pretty well.

Battery coverage, wheel nuts, spark plugs, oil tank drain nut, etc...

I have a good copy of the service manual but can't do big jobs yet.

:? In my experience all of those, and pretty much every job but for inner engine stuff, has a defined 'grunt' level all the way to 'really really tight'.

You ask pretty much any long term mechanic and they all just go by grunts rather than torques for everything but actual moving parts. I wouldn't worry too much about it if thats the level of involvement you are looking for. If you want to start taking out engine parts and putting them back in or taking the rocker cover off and fiddling with the internals then yes. Battery covers, wheel nuts and drain plugs?? Save the money and spend it on a magnetic drain plug. That will do you more good.

I kind of intend to go more into details, like you say. Being able to take an engine apart and rebuilding it later on.

Providing your 'Lude doesn't weigh 12 tons, I reckon the 2 ton ones will do nicely.

Hamp oil filters on eBay ..although I'm sure someone else will have a better link for you.
