Prelude v DC5 R

So a friend of mine that I haven't seen for years surprises me with a visit to my house yesterday and turns up in his mark 5 Golf Gti and we get talking about cars.
He is has never driven a vtec before and as my engine was still warm I handed him the keys and said lets for a drive.
Needless to say he loved the high revving nature of the vtec and the way the engine screams. I think I just may have converted a turbo man to a vtec man.
So we are chatting about him purchasing a vtec over a beer and a pizza and he mentions that he will look at the DC5 integra r.
That got me thinking - they tend to hold their price very well but are they actually thousands of pounds better than the lude?
I get that they are a newer car, newer engine, race bred where as the lude is more of a cruiser, but I was thinking he could buy a decent lude throw some money at it and still have some change left over in comparison to if he brought an R.
Are the DC5 better than the lude to justify spending that sort of money, or am I missing something?
