Anyone able to give details on how this is done, read the .gov and vosa sites but it like a foreign language to me.

If you're importing it yourself.... you'll need a clearing agent. The paperwork (invoice etc...) for the car from Japan will be posted to you via recorded mail. You're clearing agent will need some of those doc's, you can usually scan them and email them over. You're clearing agent will inform HMRC that your car is coming 14 days before arrival, and will pay duty and tax.
You'll then get paperwork to show import duty and vat has been paid,take that to the docks when you pick the car up as they'll ask for them. Then you can order a pack from the DVLA to register your import, in the meantime you can MOT the car on its VIN.
