I use AVG, backed up with occasional use of SlimCleaner. I haven't had a problem from the outside world for ages.

There's your first problem, never have more than one av installed.

Microsoft security essentials had done me proud since ditching AVG many moons ago when it started to slow everything down

When I bought my new laptop a couple of weeks ago, the guy who helps with all things tech, installed AVG. I can't really give a tech opinion, but for my everyday needs, it seems to be working okay, with no slowing down of any other programs.

I've used Avast for years, never had any problems.

Ok so first things first get rid of both of them as they are horrible bits of software. Download ccleaner to get rid of them fully.
If you are going free then Avast Free edition is pretty good. If you were to spend some money then Kaspersky and ESET are brill.

The 3 above ones are great at catching things and protecting you but also dont hog resources on your computer.

I find AVG really annoying, always popping up trying to sell me an upgrade! Other than that seems to be doing its job. I'm also having the black desktop of death every day and having to reboot, supposedly linked to the graphics driver but nothing I've tried to fix it works, and there are an endless amount of fixes out there for this problem. I wonder if perhaps AVG is causing the issue...

I'd be surprised if AVG is causing the black screen.

I don't get the pop-ups you mention, either. I use Firefox with the ads set to off.
