Lude Generation

We came back a few days ago from a pleasant potter around the West Country. The weather was good and the driving not too arduous, although the gear change mechanism now makes a clicking noise after I ran over a bit of tree. We also needed to drive from Polperro to Liskeard on the space-saver ...

Time for some pics (1 per destination).

We stopped off first to have a look around Montacute House




After zigzagging along tiny roads in the Blackdown Hills and Exmoor, we spurned the faded charm of Ilfracombe and spent the night in Croyde. More Devon lanes followed, leading us to

The Gnome Sanctuary, West Putford.




We turned down Clovelly's kind offer to let us spend money in its shops and bars for the princely entrance price of £7:50 each and instead went to Hartland




After a night in Bude, we dropped into Boscastle ...




... and Padstow



The third day ended in St Agnes.

We got up bright and early and took a four mile walk: clifftops, beaches and Wheal Coates:




Then it was on to St Ives, a place we didn't like much (too many tourists ... like us ...):




We did like Cape Cornwall ...




... and we loved the Minack Theatre:




We ended up in Perranuthnoe, a village we'd never heard of, ready for the next morning's look around St Michael's Mount:-

Good boats - and great fun to watch them racing in the Scillies.


After a couple of hours on St Michael's, we headed off to the Lizard:




We wanted to stay somewhere central for a couple of nights. St Clement seemed a nice idea, but there was no room at the inn ...




... so we ended up in Truro.




Next morning, it was off to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. We loved the place.




We liked Mevagissey, too. Here's a not-quite-failed attempt to capture the colours of the sea.

It's a short hop from Meva to the old port of Charlestown, used in lots of period dramas.




And on the other side of St Austell is another World Heritage site at Luxulyan Valley, where the industrial remains lurk in the undergrowth.




Naturally, while we were in the area, a visit to the Eden Project was called for.




The next day saw us in Polperro ...




... and then, after replacing the rear tyres, a quick look at the viaduct at Calstock.

There were a couple of places nearby we wanted to see, so we started to hunt down a room for the night. We tried 21 different places from Liskeard east and got nothing. The 22nd was a Travelodge almost halfway between Okehampton and Exeter! There was nowhere we could get a hot meal. Breakfast wasn't very good, either.

It rained, so Lydford Gorge didn't appeal. We played around Dartmoor in the mist and set off for home. First, though, was a detour to Killerton (not all that far from firstlude )




We then dropped in on Lyme Regis, where I spent many happy days in my youth ...




... did a bit of Honda-spotting ...




... and moved on to Weymouth for the night.




Our last stop on the way home was at Kingston Lacy.





To finish, here's the Integra taking a nap.
