Engine lighgt and car wont rev past 3k

Lads

I was driving the car to get some fuel and on the way back the engine light came on and the car wont rev past 3k.

Can someone please tell if they have had this before, what the issue is and how to diagnose it?

Sounds like it is in "limp home mode" best to get the fault code and take it from there.

I think wurlycorner had similar issue on his 4th gen not that long ago - although he never updated his thread with what the solution was.

Here is the issue in more detail. I drove the car to get some fuel on Sat and it went into limp mode and the engine cut out. During half time of the match i took the car out again for 10 mins and it worked fine. Vtec engaged as well.

Yesterday went to take the car to London and again the ligjt came on and the car would not rev past 2.5k. I get like a splutter sound from the exhaust. I have the pin to check for the code but im not sure how to do it.

This may sound silly but someone at work has said to never tank the car when its hot. When I fill my car I fill it past the point where it clicks to say its full. Could the expansion in the tank be the problem? Prior to this there has never been a problem with the car in the heat because it has never been fully tanked with fuel.
