Lude on BCA

Post by Sooty » Thu Feb 11, 2021 6:22 pm

Hi All,
Opinions please, I stumbled across a lude on BCA, I never thought to look there before but last week saw an Elgrand which I liked the look of and thought I'd try. Anyway, next to no chance a 3rd gen would come up and having already had a 5th gen a8 I didn't consider it (only cos I really want a 3rd gen but they are way too much now for what I want!) I'm missing the vtec, harking after a b16 from my youth which won't happen either, and for now happily rolling in an FRV which is surprisingly refined btw and If it were an auto I'd keep it.

Anyway I digress, this lude on BCA, here's the spiel:

Car will be up for auction on Monday I think it is. These pics and description is all that is available for auction cars. Can't see them in the flesh or hear them running anymore.

How much do you think the arches will cost to repair? Ball park?

Lude on BCA

I spent a summer working at a car auction about 20 years ago. My job was to drive the cars from the car park and into the auction house, wait till the bidding was over and drive it back again.

Every car was a piece of crap. Everyone.

Seems like it's the last place to bin a car off when no where else works.

There are different grades of auction cars. The bottom end are the grade 4s (which this is) and that could be due to age, condition etc. Then there are the grade 1 and 2, 1 being forecourt standard, and 2 not far off. On auctions cars I'd stick to 2 and in some cases a 3. This being a 4 though.... but it is 20+ years old so it will never really be anything else.
Also, webuyanycar is owned by BCA too so they may be one of those. It used to be fairly straightforward to find the source and from what I can see this isn't a webuy car.
Around Christmas time there was a 1 owner 1995 civic coupe with low miles, it it had full annual honda history stamped and receipted and that went for around 1000 inc fees.
Things have changed with grading but that applies to cars less than 10 years old where they carry out AA style multipoint checks.
Independent dealers buy from these big auction houses, and they are big, and I agree there will be some junk out there.

**Edit - there are grade 5's too

I would 100% go and see it in person before placing a bid. Pictures can hide a million sins.

@ATR84 Sadly there are no viewings, for any of the auctions and that won't change anytime soon. Around Nov time I bought a 2007 CTR, 1 owner with about 100k on there for £1700, the pictures were grainy and pixelated, but I figured it's a 1 owner car with a clean mot history. Anyway on pickup, there was lacquer peel, worn button, kerbs wheels and when I drove it there were knocks, abs light on etc. another £400ish and a fresh mot and it drove tight, but still laquer peel, and general paint made it look tired.

So you are absolutely right.

I never did get on with that gear stick position though so in some respects I'm glad I paid bottom end money to find I didn't like it.

Lude on BCA

Just to finish this off, I did some digging. The car is a 2 owner car, and was maintained by a dealer up to 2019. It is being put through BCA under a muti-vendor banner which is the one they use for small time traders or individuals, and this particular trader has put through 15 cars in 3 years. Car is from stockon on tees and was last dealer serviced in July 2019 and after that the next mot was last week (I don't know where).
Bodywork looks like a dent in the bonnet, and damage to the passenger door and rusty arches.
All things considered I'm not going to have a punt. It will be interesting to see how much it goes for sale for next week after someone buys it though.
