car txt checks - how reliable?

Post by bristol_bb4 » Mon Jun 04, 2012 10:09 pm

supposed to be going to grab this tomorrow for my mrs

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p

its advertised as having 85k on the clock....ive just done a txt check with these

https://www.mytextcheck.com/

and its coming up saying the car has infact done 110,000 miles! where do i stand in regards to confronting the seller about it? he is a registered trader if that makes any difference?

I think Rob rates a certain text check service and does something with buying/selling. Might be worth dropping him a PM?

My text check is reliable, it will grab the mileage info from the NMR register. The NMR register isn't always correct as it can flag up a car as being clocked, when its not. These cars that are flagged up when they're not clocked will be close to the actual mileage its done.

For example: mytext check or hpi shows mileage at 100,000. Actual mileage reading on car is 102,000.

I could explain how discrepncies against honest cars end up on the NRM register, but I can't be arsed

In this case the mileage on the car is 85k and NMR says its 110k, there's 25,000 miles difference. This car your looking at WILL be clocked, the only way to get an idea of the actual mileage is to get the V5 document reference number off his V5 and VOSA check it.

There's not much you can do apart from inform trading standards.

Don't buy the car tho ;)

He sounds like a shady trader, he will of paid drokk all for that car at auction.

Grab the document reference number off the V5 then visit here:

http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/j ... equest.jsp

Enter the reference number and reg for the car, and it will show all the MOT history for the car. Look at the mileages recorded at each MOT and you'll be able to figure out how many miles have been knocked off and what year it was clocked.

I'd recommend checking the V5 against the DVLA's records as suggested. I did it on my Golf as I knew the clocks in it weren't original, turns out it's done about 190K compared to the 130K indicated

I think you should drop trading standards a call too - I know that you might have no problem with the car having higher mileage, but if you buy it he's getting away with underhand practice, and the next car might go to somebody without a clue :(

Just my two pence though! :)

surely in some circumstances it may not be his fault?
my kid had a pug 306 that said 76,000 on clock but the seller did say he had trouble with the clocks and had changed them with a set from a scrap car. then my son had trouble with the new clocks and got another set from our scrappies! so if he had px'd the car with a trader and not told him about the 2 clock changes, then??

but a very good bargaining tool to have to knock some money off ;)

The seller is not the seller apparantly! From the add "Selling on behalf of customer"
Yes right I believe you!So if it falls apart on the way home, its sorry mate you did not buy it from me it was a private sale!
