common problem with imports

Phone up an insurance company, talk to a human being, and tell them that the model that shows up on a DVLA search on their systems is incorrect, and they'll click on the right model on the system (if they have the BB4 on their system) and attach your reg number to that model, rather than loading the model from the reg.

Just tell the insurance company it is wrong? If the V5 and chassis both say BB4 then ultimately that is correct, not them! My V5 makes no mention of Motegi, yet when insuring it it comes up as Motegi edition (although this isn't quite as much of a difference as yours!).
IIRC lots of EK4's we're incorrectly registered as EK9's or something during a certain time period. Again slightly different, but still mistakes are made when they shouldn't be.
Just tell your prospective insurers it's a BB4 (as stated in the logbook) and I imagine you'll be okay?

Yeah, had the same problem with mine mate. It was pretty hit and miss speaking to insurers, some could find a suitable model some couldn't. Most couldn't though, seems the Si VTEC is a myth 
on the DVLA database my car is a Prelude 2.0I 2.2 saloon 
apparently the problem with Grey zone imports is that the model listed on the V5 is at the discretion of whoever at Swansea updated the database to include your car - a data entry clerk who understandably won't know every single model of car in the world has to find a similar uk model to enter on the form. Mass confusion ensues

Not sure about that, as my understanding is grey zone import models aren't shown correctly on V5's as the DVLA will just use the nearest match. I think the insurance company's concern is what the vehicle actually isjozefsan wrote:as im aware insurance details must match V5 details
I definitely wouldn't want to insure my Prelude as a 2.0i like the V5 says, that'd be asking for trouble

my old bb1 came up as an accord 4ws lol
i think in the event of an accident it is cheaper to buy another car then to claim. you could keep your old car, transfer all the good bits over, sell what is sellable and weigh in the shell or whatever and come up top.
even if it is not your fault you will still get bummed and pay more for the next how many years. insurance these days is just to stop u gettin your car taken off you by police, since thats all they do anymore.

DVLA reg look up on quote engines isn't always reliable. It is worse for private plates and imports.
On our quote system, we have the facility to overtype any incorrect models and then select the model from a list, which includes imports.
If you are doing online quotes and your model is not coming up, you will need to ring the insurer so they can enter the correct model details and get you a quote over the phone.
You can use the ABI site to check your model details. They grey imports show a "G" next to them. http://www.thatcham.org/abigrouprating/ the site used to show the ABI codes which is what the insurers use, but it looks like it doesn't anymore.
Be aware that not all Insurers will cover imports, unless of course they are parallel (ie made for the UKDM).
