A question for you audio wizards

I've got an old Hitachi HA-1800 amp that I *ahem* borrowed from my dad.

One of these:

I've just now worked out that my PS3 can output audio separately from HDMI (my TV has no audio output other than digital, so it won't work with the amp).

I tried plugging the PS3 in to the TV via HDMI and the amp via the AV cable (obviously only using the audio cables). However the amps output to the speakers is either very quiet or non-existent! The audio seems to fade in and out as well. I've tried changing input between the 3 options (Phono, Tuner and Aux) as well as plugging the speakers in to the different outputs (A or B).

Does anyone have any pointers as to what could cause this?

I'm bidding on this at the mo (winning!):

It's pretty much the same as the Hitachi in my eyes, I know nothing of them and it was the only thing in my price range I knew would work

Well.

jobby.

As I was writing this I realised I hadn't tried other speakers... I think you can guess what happened.

These self-fixing threads are great.

Tell me about it. I gave up on the auction (went for £50 in the end) but it turns out some connection is dodgy in the speakers. I opened the back up but can't see anything wrong other than some yellowing on the solder. Going to give it a dab more solder and then secure the cable properly at the back.

To save using another thread, I have an audio problem. :(

I have a Sony 5.1 surround amp, but now I'm not getting any sound from the left and right speakers.
If I give it a bash it sometimes comes back on for a little while.

Any ideas? :?

Retro owns.

I drokking love the fact that i can play my iP4s through a mid 1980's system using a headphone jack to L/R RCA adapter.

Sadly that just sounds like a bad connection somewhere. You'd need to get the multimeter out and poke around to find out where.
