Crank pulley - Common fault?

Post by nitin_s1 » Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:35 pm

Sooooo.. Guess what happened?

Crank pulley wobbled out of it's place again. Same scenario as my old SiR. Driving and then all of a sudden power steering was lost then had to emergency stop on the side of the road. Called the AA but he couldn't tow it home due to the car being too low so had to wait 2 hours for a big tow truck to lift the car.

I think I will need a new crank pulley and few new belts (I think I have some that Phil sent me last time - Cheers 4thgenphil :) ). Just as last time, I'm hoping that nothing has happened to the timing belt :x

I can go get a crank pulley from VTECdirect at £150+ but if anyone has one that they would like to sell then it would be sexily awesome.

I'm not gutted about that I have to spend money on it, gutted about coming to see everyone at LLL meet and that skittles vodka.

Phil is sexy, I've offered him to have sex with me and loose my virginity. I owe him big time. :)

The cheap pulley from eBay - is it any good?

Merlin says the lightweight pulley is good
There was an article on pro and cons but id say if you cant get an oem one at a reasonable price then deffo go for the ebay one-make sure its the right one with 6 ribs on the main pulley

PerformanceAutoworks wrote:The H22 crank pulley IS NOT a harmonic damper - the rubber is an isolator - there is a difference.
The rubber isolator's main point of being is to isolate the crankshaft from the loads and vibrations caused by running several components at varying loads at the same time (AC, PAS, Alt) and the need to run the belts at quite a high tension - the AC being the biggest load
With the PAS and AC removed there is 100% absolutely no issue with running a BALANCED solid alluminium item which can also have the PAS section machined off to suit this application.
With AC removed I also have no issues with suggesting or running alluminium pullies even if PAS is retained as belt tension can be reduced. I still ALWAYS recommend balancing the pully before fitting though.

I have run many motors "built" or otherwise in both road trim and race trim with solid ally pullies with no consequence at all.
My one concern is when wanting to run one and retaining the AC as well - I do not recommend this for the reasons mentioned above. Having said that I have installed several at the request of customers with no issues.

I still have my PAS and AC in my 5th, which has the alloy underdrive pulley

But I have my AC on most of the times. Would that be a problem?

I had unorthodox under drive pulleys on my old engine, never had a problem, Sir_Chris ditched it for a OEM honda one and it failed

Seems the build quality is better in the aftermarket stuff
