Should I?

Banter goes here, and doesn't have to be Lude related

Should I?

Post by jjmartin349571 » Sat Jul 21, 2012 1:46 pm

Hi guys,

As you may know I've been looking for a turbo diesel estate for a while, as a commuter and for taking the dog out, shifting car parts etc. The plan was to get a Mk3 Golf estate or a peugeot 405 estate... However something a bit exciting has come up for sale locally - a Toyota Hilux Surf. It's a '93 import, 2.4 tdi, huge boot and it's 4WD and an auto (I know that's not usually a plus, but I commute through so much traffic that manuals are doing my head in these days). Plus they've always been a car I've thought was mega cool. Only 80,000 miles on the clock and it's got a decent MOT. All for £650, and I'm just asking myself, do I do it?! It ticks some of the boxes, enough to be viable, but I have no idea what they are like. Anyone owned a diesel Toyota? Or even better does somebody want to talk some sense in to me, tell me that an office worker does not need a truck

As Phil said, parts are pricey and they're bum droppings on fuel. Yep they have the space, but its the only box it really ticks isn't it?

How about an aerodeck?

I hate changing heads!! Was bad enough on my 8v Golf

I read that the fuel economy on the kind of driving I do is about 27 to the gallon, similar to the lude. I'm guessing as it's a 93 then the tax is exactly the same as on my Golf & Prelude. Was planning on mixing in some veg oil too, I read that these were fine on it.

Maybe I shall leave it, shame though as I really wanted a truck!! My girlfriend even liked the idea which is a bloody rarity

Btw Rob, which Aerodeck are you thinking? The 80's model or one of the later ones. I do love the later aerodecks, the engine choices put me off a bit though.

they do run off veg well but the fuel pump seals will seap after a while, generally fixed by running a tank of diesel through it ;)

pug 405 or early 406's( 1.9 or 2.1) run great on veg and so do the citreons, generally the bosch pumps are better but i never had an issue with my lucas pump. 306 estate? i managed to fit a lude bonnet in the back of my hatch  it was a superleggera version though and had nothing in the back, not plastics, seats, seat belts or door cards  i do miss my little pug, i kicked the living crap out of it for 60 miles a day and it never gave up! eventually tried to kill me a few times when the rear beam bushes gave up! crashed it a couple of time aswell in the snow after watching a little to much wrc
