Can't even begin to think how the different religions will start trying to explain the reasons for it...would be very interesting to watch.

Well apparently the world isn't as old as it evidently is. I remember reading one Christian spokesperson said that dinosaur skeletons had undergone rapid aging during the Noah flood bit, so that's why they seem to be millions of years old, but the world is only a few thousand years old

TBH it wouldn't change a lot, for instance the Mormons deny the dinosaurs ever existed so they wouldn't have a problem with denying anything else.
I'm not religious BTW, but I just think that a lot of followers would still believe that a higher being made everything, including any other races etc.
Had an interesting talk with my Mum and Dad in law once, both religious, but she's a scientist - She said she just does not believe that the bible is literal, she believes in science obviously, and evolution for that fact, but believes in a higher power. Interesting how two groups formally at odds with each other are now spawning less literal (more liberal?) believers.
Wow, where did all that come from?!

meh, religion deals with the spirit, science with the physical. The issue is that religion hates to have any of its ground taken by fact so fights all the way. if they just stuck to spiritual things they wouldnt be so damn annoying.
I hope they find a crushed pepsi can.

I hear ya.
All I mean is that my Mum in law for instance, would LOVE if they found a Pepsi can!!
I'm just saying I don't think every religious person in the world would start running around with their arms flapping saying "durka durka durka!"
Not every religious person is an annoying outspoken god-squad recruiter for example, if they were, I certainly wouldn't have married my Mrs. She and I both hate the typical street preachers around here, me because they are bloody annoying and they are spreading fear, not worship, her because she doesn't want anyone to associate her with all that crap.

It'd be a fantastic discovery; it's close enough that it OUGHT to have been wet & life existed. That's before Martian-made Global Warming (you just wait for the conspirators to start!) apparently ruined it...It all helps build the bigger picture.
Don't worry about religious types; they've spent so long being brainwashed with proscribed diatribe from their books not to know what they don't know about the burden of proof, empiricity, or other evidence-based methodology and are best patted on the bottom & left to their fantasies. It's a shame their missing out on so much beauty in the universe, but tough sh it; it's their loss.
Trouble is, most of the brainwashing was done on very young children (and yet they pour scorn on Mr Savile?) so some with a scientific rational mind still find it difficult to shake off their superstition entirely; it's too ingrained in their non-rational minds.
Still, we have more modern superstitions to control the population with today; Marketing, tabloid television, AGW conspiracies, imaginary terrorists, etc etc....
Suddenly, Mars seems quite attractive.
