I wouldn't advise it as the shaft could start spinning and then you'd damage the diff. Anyway of popping the shaft out ?

i thought this may be the case. the problem i have is that the car is currently stranded at the side of a road so not really in an ideal place to start jacking it up etc. Frustrating bit is that its only half a mile if that from my house.

the joint nearest the gearbox has broke so the shaft is hanging down from the hub to the floor and Im left with the cup still in the gearbox but not attached to anything.

As long as its in neutral and the shaft cant fly around i cant see it causing any damage to the diff.

so it doesn't matter that one side of the diff will be spinning whilst the other is stationary then?
