and tell them to send it as a gift or to pick up the paypal charges or agree to split them between the two of you.

The second option would cover you (to a point) if something went wrong, but you will pay a fee for it.
Also worth noting that another fee will also apply if/when you transfer the money from your paypal account to your bank account.

I've just checked and your right, could have swore that I'd been charged in the past for this.

Western union or moneygram usually via Nigeria suits me fine.
