See if you can find a Peugeot 206 HDi 90 (the 2.0 litre one from 1999 ish) - 65 MPG and cheap to insure. Rapid enough to stop you getting bored too.
Avoid the Micra. Never felt so unsafe driving a car, and I used to own a Metro.

i am using a seat arosa (same as vw lupo) 1.7 sdi diesel for commuting for the last 3 years and has never failed me. Definately paid for itself - group 2 insurance
super economy without the high price tag and its a throw away car really
i get 65mpg average and over 70 if i drive carefully
slow as jobby though
(has the usual vw failures like - dodgy central locking, bearings give up and window regs are bum droppings but they are fairly cheap to replace. changed my rear bearings and were only £8 each

I was considering the 306 diesel but I can't get a 206 as iv givi my mate so much abuse about his 206 gti the backlash would be monumental

as for the Clio it's not something I'd look for but if one popped up a good deal I'd take it
Seat arosa my friends just got the 1.4tdi one im actually a fan of it

really wanted the 1.4 tdi at the time but couldnt justify spending the money on one and Knowing i would rack the miles on it (typcially £3k for them at the time) so went for the older model at only £1k - not bad as it does the job. Hardly spent anything on it as most of the funds goes on the prelude.
VW do a polo in saloon format with the 1.9SDI engine.
Really wanted a honda as my second car but they didnt do the MPG i required at the time
I am doin 50 miles round trip to work now when before i did 140 miles but now it costs be roughly £4.00 per day on diesel using the Arosa. That includes traffic on the west side of the m25 heading to slough

They certainly go well enough.
Just can't go wrong with one of those 1.9 mechanical injection PSA diesel lumps (preferably the turbo version).
306's don't rust either and the handling's good too.
