Horse meat

If you are of the " i trust nobody and all companies are evil" persuasion - I'll save you time - you may as well stop reading now.

I don't know if I should put this under the 'humour' section as this topic is just simply the gift that goes on giving!
For the record I work in the food sector but nothing to do with meat. I don't know what is worst or most funny about this – people’s reactions or authorities being exposed as terminally under resourced!

I got an 'alert bulletin update' from one of my fast tracking resources (normally pretty good) that headed 'authorities now suspect fraud’. Well feck me! - they have finally got Sherlock on the case and we can all sleep better knowing that there are not poor horses out there wandering into unattended mincers! <muppets>

Bottom line, ANY system can be bypassed by determined criminals. Certification has been forged or it may be in some cases not checked thoroughly enough. Traceability is a basic requirement for any food with additional requirements for meat. In fact, in Dec 2011 (with 3 year transition) the new Food information to consumers legislation was published. Among other things this extended the country of origin requirements for meat to include, birth, rear and slaughter.

The real scandal here and the thing not being reported as usual........ is that organised crime has become unmanageable and very sophisticated. To the point where this jobby is happening under peoples noses and there is not the will or resource to fix it. I'm still horrified that there are some member states that receive shedloads from the EU but do not sort out corruption and crime. Step forward Ireland, Poland and many other more eastern members. This type of crime is seen as huge profit, small potential consequence and we are directly funding it in many cases

I'm not turning this into an EU rant - I'm a healthy EU sceptic, not a head in the sand Euro-cynic (believe we have to be in it to negotiate as this is infinitely better than having zero voice - long story, also linked to experience in job, Swiss model a disaster for UK). I just wanted to put forward a different point of view that seems to be being lost among the stupid meaningless stories about X% horse in Y product.

It's far easier to rape fines out of accountants & solicitors for minor money-laundering infringements, than it is to pursue real organised crime. The likes of HSBC get a mere slap on the wrist for massive criminal conspiracy. Polyingticiunts like to be seen to be doing something, whilst actually doing little of any real consequence.

As long as the passed-off meat IS fit for consumption (moot point!) since it's only going into cheapo processed hoof&eyelidburgers etc anyway, it's probably a good way of recycling protein. Many horses are being destroyed as a result of the economic depression.

Horse is a delicacy

Cows are farmed to be slaughtered. Farmed by loads

Are horses? Or donkeys for that matter?

I've got no problem eating horse meat as long as I'm told before hand but I don't buy the food products that are in question any way. I'm not blind I understand the process of what happens to my food before it makes it to the shelf in my supermarket.

Of course there's criminals involved ( I even said to the mrs before it was stated " I bet the production facility is in Ireland" ) they said on the news this morning that there's no evidence of criminal activity. ....

In the above paragraph I didn't mean it to sound like all irish people are criminals....

Don't apologise; universal affirmatives may only be partially converted and people who cannot grasp that philosophical premise are invariably looking to be offended, often in the interests of compensation or somesuch. Call it PC-criminality, if you will.

or:

I don't believe there are any whores in the food.

all this is only in the prepacked precooked made for people who have no tastebuds or cant be arsed to get off the couch because they are morbidly obese lazy bastards

Maybe its because i like cooking i am very choosy about cuts of meat, not that i would be scared of eating horsemeat ( in my time i have pretty much eaten everything that walks or crawls and some stuff that doesnt)but i want the right to choose what i eat.
The moral of the story is cook it yourself that way you know whats in it!!

I really don't see what the problem is! I mean yeah they should have maybe put it on the ingredients but come on! People eat sausages don't they? Next time your out shopping look at the ingredients for a pack of sausages and I bet its something like

40% "meat"
40% rusk
20% water

Have a little read up on mechanically reclaimed meat. That's where your horse meat came from as well btw!

People are kicking off yet a horse rump would cost more than a fillet steak
