late last week my name was pulled out of the hat for a work draw of old computer equipment.
i have been given a HP Compaq 6710b laptop, although i did have to pay £10 for tax perposes.
completely wiped with no operating system.
gave it to my mate who has installed a new battery, ubuntu os, an extra 2gig memory and a power supply/charger. he did all this for £25.

so for £35 i now have a fairly old but very usable 3gig ram 80 gig hard drive laptop.

up til now id never heard of ubuntu but im very happy. seems very good and its so quick to use but not quite as user friendly as windows, but that will take time.

posted using new laptop.

Posting from my IBM Thinkpad T60 running Linux Mint
Its been my first foray into linux but like you I'm impressed, especially since its free, very efficient and I can carry the whole O/S round on a USB stick 8-)

Linux is way better than it used to be, I like to dabble now and again. Shame i need windows for gaming and other stuff (Although Steam is now on Linux but not many games are supported yet)

Ubuntu is considered one of the more n00b friendly distributions, but I currently favour Mint for that purpose.

Saying all that, any Linux distribution will be 100% free, and 100% secure out the box. No need for virus checkers, malware checkers etc - welcome to a real operating system

If you have any questions, and your mate is busy, feel free to fire me a PM (or try the forums here: http://ubuntuforums.org/).
