Broadband Speed

Post by Gayno » Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:34 am

I've been having all sorts of problems with my broadband recently, mainly it would drop out when you used the phone.

BT engineer has just been. Replaced the faceplate for a fancy new one, and re-terminated the line through all the green street cabs.

I was getting a sync speed of around 2500Kb before, but now look:

Obviously it's only just been done, so lets see if my stability improves and we can actually watch an iPlayer without it buffering?!

Well our Exchange came 19th in the UK in BT's Race To Infinity, but as yet they've not rolled it out to us. Proof that it was just a big marketing ploy, not actual research.

We've now been told we've been selected for fibre rollout as part of the BDUK funding, and we'll get it by March 2016. Can't wait......../sarcasm

We probably won't be here in 3 years so it's all crap.

Yeah it could be worse. Speedtest is currently showing just 2.6Mb though, but with the instability over the last few weeks I've got to let it settle back down first.

I have a NAS box which I just load all the downloads into and leave it running overnight. Next day it's all there waiting for me.

Here's the one I have:

http://www.zyxel.com/products_services/nsa221.shtml?t=p

Good cheap box, got it for around £45 and it does everything I need. File transfer is a little slow, but I only have the media PC really so don't need to stream multiple files to different devices simultaneously. The NSA320 is the next model up which does have faster transfer rates.

I actually do need a new hard drive, only got ~70GB free space left on mine and I'm still to run backup of mine and Rach's Documents folders.

Current setup is a 500GB and 750GB SATA drive mirrored (RAID 1) at 500GB, so putting in a 750GB+ drive will instantly give me and extra 250GB which should see me a while!
