Hi Folks,

I have this sticker on the wing of my Accord:



It's got me wondering where the asbestos is in the bulkhead maybe??

Brake pads?

I hope they're not original then, otherwise I'm just driving round releasing asbestos dust And also I was sniffing my brakes last night, wasn't sure what was burning after my evening drive

Clutch and brake discs are definitely areas it would have been, but there are other areas it could/would be too (gaskets, exhaust silencers, sound deadening being likely candidates).

Nothing to worry about really though, the warning stickers are aimed at mechanics who'd be exposed to lots of it during their working day.As an owner/DIY occasional mechanic your exposure is sooo low it's zero or negligible.

Asbestos is still around us in all sorts of things you wouldn't necessarily expect and is virtually all absolutely safe in its normal state, it's only if disturbed that it can become a hazard.

It's only really blue asbestos crystals that are extremely harmful if inhaled.

That's the stuff in schools & hospitals & ships & stuff. Mesothilioma is frequently the result. They tried to blame smoking (so as not to get sued) but it's odd how smoking seems to significantly affect mostly blue-collar classes!

If you have older Artex ceilings, they contain asbestos too.

My MX-5 had a warning about keeping hands away from the roof when folding it. Seriously. So I'd ignore that one as well.

Yeah it'll be the clutch bud. Had those stickers in my Accord too.

Any kind of asbestos is bad for you, and just 1 bit can potentially kill you there is just a very very small chance of that.

What I find interesting is if you worked with asbestos without protection you have 30% of having a illness from it. If you smoke you have 30% chance of having I illness from that. But if you do Both it's basically a 90% chance you will have a illness and most likely life threatening.

It was only a couple years ago you could put asbestos in your boot and drive it to your local tip and they would throw it into a big trailer with dust goin everywhere. Try that now and they go mental!!! Yes I did try hehe

Just break it up, put it in bin liners, and in with the household rubbish.

Easy day's money for me when I used to work near the stuff. Putting up scaffolds for people to take the asbestos down, know full well they need to sheet the scaffold and remove all dust, debris etc. before I take it down. Drove all the way to Bedford once (takes a long time at 56mph to take it down... nope they hadn't done any clean up. Refuse to work, go home fully paid. Much love for HSE.

That's why I've lined my throat with asbestos when having a fag. The chances go back down to 30%.

You're still allowed to take sheeting to some designated tips, provided that the surface 'skin' is intact and there are no loose fibres showing.
