No Claims Bonus Joke

Post by claymore68 » Tue Jun 11, 2013 6:23 pm

Ok my lude is about ready to go for MOT and I thought it would be a good idea to check out insurance quotes.
However me and Amanda use a Tiguan for our work and the ludes been off the road for three years...surprise surprise £850 to insure a car worth £700 when Im 45 yrs old .Reason being that I have no No Claims Bonus as I have been the second driver on the Tiguan . What a nightmare and thats before I add a mod . Anyone think of anything to cheer me up
Its a work in progress

Shop around - maybe you can get it insured on the back of the Tiguan?

There are certain firms that offer one 'additional car' discounts - Flux have done for me in the past.

Bell Direct were offering it if we added a second car too!

Otherwise, you might have to insure a boggo Civic 1.4 for a year...

Crazy. I'm 20 years younger and paying less on a car with mods declared.

Try a multi car policy, ie a family fleet type thing, like Admiral do. I'm not endorsing Admiral, they may well be jobby. That way they may mirror the NCB onto the Prelude.

Or, as suggested, if you are husband & wife, see if you can get a second policy in your wife's name and mirror her NCB onto the Lude. You will still not earn any NCB as the policies will both be in her name, unless you kill her and transfer the policies upon her death.

Other than that, speak to one of the many club sponsors, like CK, Prestige or whatever they are called. Explain the situation and see if they can give you an intro NCB equivalent to max NCB. They can usually pretty much can do what they want with the rates as long as they see a profit for the insurers, so they may be able to help you out.

Online quotes cant think, so i wouldn't bother with them in your case, you need to talk someone who can assess the risk for what it is and rate it fairly.

Have you tried a quote through RSA Echoice. Even with low no claims they seem reasonable. I can insure my prelude for £140 with three years no claims (which i built upon a second policy - i use my 10 years NCD on my 'normal' car). That' £140 is only third party fire and theft though. Think the excess was £250 or £300.

It makes the road tax look extortionate!

Failing that,I would agree with other comments -try a multicar policy which takes into account what is effectively joint no claims. :)

Insurance quotes seem to come down when you up the value of you're own car. Instead of saying its worth £700 on the comparison sites, set it at least £3000, also add an older female family member onto the policy even if they won't drive it. Saying its garaged can als increase the premium.
