Budget DSLR's......talk to me!

Post by rob quilter » Sun Jul 14, 2013 11:00 am

I'm in the market for a DLSR in the next 5-6 weeks, I have no idea about them really. It will be for casual use, like car shows/meets etc....

Anyone got any recommendations for a decent priced noob DSLR?
What lense would I need?

Have a look here: http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/post88556.html#p88556

I'm on my way out right now but if you're interested PM me and I can do something more on the price, I think I've discounted a fair bit off since I first advertised it but I CBA to eBay it  Not entry level but not fully profesh, a good price for a good camera IMO ;) @nitin_s1 bought the lens that I had on this (both from new) and can vouch for condition and my packaging skills

I'm not sure if its what you are after but I bought a fujifilm finepix s5700 a couple of years ago and have been really pleased with it do it may be worth looking at the latest version of it. I paid round about £120 at the time.

I showed it to a guy from work who used to be big into photography and had all the super duper lenses etc and developed his photos in his own red room and he was that impressed he went out and bought one himself to try to rekindle his love. I've spoke to him since and he reckons he's very pleased with it too and says its ideal as a starter camera or for casual use etc

I think so bud but don't quote me on that. Like I say mines quite old now so I expect the new version would :) its definitely a good camera for the money but check all the specs for yourself and make sure you can use the lenses you want with it as I'm in no way whatsoever an expert lol

Had a quick search, you can get your model used on eBay for around £50, there's a newer version for £119 new. It says they take AA batteries tho, rather than having a rechargeable battery. How long do the batteries last on yours?

Yeah mine takes AA' s which I thought was a bit disappointing. I can't really say how long they last to be honest as I only use the camera occasionally. The one benefit of AA's though is when you are out and your camera dies you can pick up some more from almost anywhere :-)

Something to think about, do you think this photography lark is something you're going to pursue further as you get into it?

If so you're likely to want to upgrade lenses at some stage, and this will mean you are tied to a brand (Nikon stuff wont work with Canon stuff etc).
A lot of people will tell you to only buy Canon or Nikon, which is utter nonsense. The other brands are just as capable.
However, as Canon and Nikon are so much more popular (I believe they take up ~90% of the DSLR market) it means you are more likely to find stuff on eBay.

I would advise to go to Jessops (or similar) and have a play with whats on offer.
Buy the one you like the feel of, because you're the one that has to use it, and don't get too hung up on specifications. One or two extra megapixels wont have too much of a dramatic difference.

As for the video, will you definitely use it?
I wanted it on my first SLR, as I thought it was a good thing to have. I've still never used it.

This is Canons base model, and looks like it should be good enough as a starter.
No idea what Nikons equivalent is.

Buy a Canon, the other brands are sh1t
