well after wasting three hours of my life on a seminar tonight hosted by gates the only conclusion i can come up with is gates make the best belts that money can buy but if it all goes pear shaped its the fitters fault. they have a reason for every single timing belt failure in the world and none of them include belt failure. even though they are manufactured to last 300,000 km :o gates guarantee the belts for only 60,000 miles or 2 years  gates are probably one of the best makes you can buy as a non oem item but when it goes tits up your gonna be on your own. bill gates must be a shareholder

One thing that I can never get my head around! We could send a dude to the moon 50 years ago yet we still can't make a belt that will last the life of a car :?

Can't, or won't?!

Not gonna make any money if people's belts don't give up every now & then, are they. Bastards.

Well heres a situation then. I have a timing belt to do on a focus st now with an interval of 120, 000 miles or 10 years. Its on 80, 000 and 6 years but he wants it done for piece of mind. If I were to fit a gates belt it wwould need doing in 2 years again or 60, 000 miles as thats all they guarantee it for.

If the Focus ST has an interval if 120,000 miles or 10 years, who manufactures the OEM belt for this?

Is there anyone who offers a longer warranty? IMO if there's evidence it really is good for 300,000km like Gates say then I'd be inclined to just fit it and forget about it!! Then again if the belt snaps on one of my cars it's not like I'd be massively out of pocket, bit different for people with expensive motors I guess.

Interesting. Well if 120,000 miles or 10 years is what the Focus manual states, then Ford have to honour that surely, should the belt fail before then?

If done at a ford dealer, yep.

This 2 years only guarantee is meaningless, don't worry about it. Belts have had 6 year service intervals since I was a kid (a few decades lol) and they haven't been snapping all that time just because they're only guaranteed for 2 years.

As for expecting a belt to last 10 years though, sod that!

Ps think Ford OEM belts are Dayco, not gates.
