Hi folks,

Is this kind of nut splitter any good?

I've done something stupid to the nuts on my upper control arm and they're just spinning now, access isn't great so I don't want to use my grinder to remove them :?

Cheers,
Josh

I've had some success with them in the past.
Depends on the hardness of the nut you're trying to split, really. Also how far down onto the nut you can get the splitter.
Unless you can get the splitter properly down onto the nut (so the chisel can cut right through the bottom of it as well) you can up just mangling things but not really getting anywhere.

What's the access look like onto the nut you're working on? Pic?

And the problem I had:

The studs couldn't be pushed home and so I tried tightening the nuts to pull them through, but it seems to have stripped the threads instead :? Rollocks.

That's bonkers! :? How can that not have pulled the bush threads through?

Well there's only one way to find out - give it a go with the nut splitter. If it doesn't work, you can always resort to the angle grinder after all...

No idea, I can only assume that the hole was slightly too small :?

Cool, I'll dart down Screwfix tomorrow morning and with any luck that splitter will do the trick. If I have to use the grinder I guarantee I will slice straight through the loom

use a dremel to give the splitter something to go at or it will just ride off it

Try putting some force up under the nut as your undoing it, as in try to lever the nut off with the open end of a spanner ect. This work best with air tools. That usually work for me when the nut grabs the tread.
