Is there an accurate yet inexpensive GPS Digital Speedometer that isn't a HUD on the market?

I'm pretty sure my OEM Speedo reading is out and that I'm actually going a fair bit faster than it would have me believe. I can't be bothered messing about with converter chips or the like, I'd just like a reliable plug'n'play digital readout.

There are plenty of £20-£30 GPS HUDs on ebay, but I don't want a HUD. That is the kind of price range I'm hoping for though. I've also got an app on my phone, but besides the fact I don't know how reliable it is, I don't want the hassle of having to turn it on and clamping my phone up each drive.

What phone do you have? Could you not use apple or google maps satnav to tell you what speed you are doing? Just initially to see if your speedo is out.

I've got a Sony Android. I didn't know there was a speed readout on Google Maps ???? Surely though that would give the same readout as my Speedo app gives (pretty much), and like I say I'm not wholey sure how accurate that is. At the moment the app and my OEM speedo are different. I don't know which one is wrong though or if either is correct.

Have you changed the VSS at some point? I had to play about with a few after having my ATR LSD installed, as the speed was out. Just a thought.

I haven't touched the VSS. I assume it will be an ATR one as the lump and gearbox are from an ATR and it's been converted from an auto.

In android market, have a look for tomtom navigation.

It gives a 50 mile free trial of the full software and tells you the speed you are doing via gps.

Ok, so that leads me to asking how accurate/laggy are the GPS is in phones these days? Surely That TomTom app will give the same reading as the app I already have and the Google Maps app??? Do they use the same satellites?

Whereas a dedicated GPS Speedo (most of which cost over £100) can surely offer more accuracy?...

Yea the dedicated ones will definately be more accurate but will cost you. The TomTom app ive found to be the most accurate for me out of all the navigation apps and the delay is minimal.
You could just establish a baseline i supose with the app for free first to check if you are massively out or not.
For comparrison my speedo reports 2mph .. ish faster than the gps reports and around 2.5 mph at 70.

Oh that's pretty good then. Cool I'll give it a go. I'll compare between the app I already have and Google Maps as well.

No prob. FWIW, when I had issues, I used a GPS speedo app on the phone to get me by and it was perfect.
When I swapped the VSS gearing over, it 'confirmed' that it's now spot on.
