97 lude is OBD2 so best keeping to OBD2 to make the swap easy - so H22A5 or you could also look at the H22A8 engine out of the late edition ukdm 5th gens as this is OBD2 but has 197bhp and higher comp pistons and wont be as expensive to buy as H22A7 ;) You might want to grab the ecu as well if your going H22A7 or H22A8.

Thanks vanzep.. If I get a h22a with an ecu and then buy an ecu jumper to convert to obd2 would I have to change or mess about with anything else?

I have a h22a5 I'm hopefully going to be pulling out within the next month from 98 5th gen I purchased with a failed auto box, was going to keep it as a spare but no room, engine is complete minus the alternator dizzy and aircon pump that I've sold. Done 160k miles but has a fair bit of service history including cam belt change at 114k from what I remember looking through receipts. Car was in daily use before box failed and Mot'd so assume all was well with Car.
Looking for £350 collected Northampton

Your H22A5 engine is OBD2 - if your getting a H22A1(jdm) or H22A2 (ukdm) they are OBD1 so you would need to get a conversion harness and/or do some work to get it up and running. Its not impossible to do but obviously more work - how much work im not sure. Obviously easiest to work with H22A5 or H22A8.
Youd be best to get some info on engine swaps from others on the forum as ive only worked on OBD1 H22A1 engines.

Merlin might be able to give your more info as he had a few different engines in his track lude ;)

Swap all the ancillaries (alternator, distributor, most of the sensors etc)

There are plenty of 5g breakers out there (on here or in Breaker yards) so getting an a5 should be easy enough, I would stick with that route tbh.

This.

Any H22 can easily be swapped into any Prelude so long as you use the matching alternator, distributor, injectors etc with the correct ECU. A non matching ECU will work but it might over fuel or look for missing sensors.

Hello yes I do indeed have a working A5, just needs a Rocker cover! It's been covered tho since removal!
