You can do it without one. Remove the castle nut, put it on backwards to save the castle top bit, have the nut at the bottom of the thread to protect the thread, and hit it with a hammer ;)

i would really recommend not using the ball joint splitter because the boots might get damaged.

giving it a good whack with a hammer does sort it. and if you do it right it just pops out.
