Thanks to new stupid MOT ruling and a ham-fisted previous owner I need a replacement ignition barrel that has a working steering lock and keys...
I've tried greasing it up, WD40, hammers, swearing, nothing will get the fekkin steering lock working!
I have a '93 4th gen 2.3i 4ws - in case it matters
Thanks guys
Doug

Doug, when you do this, you can take the cylinder out of your existing lock and swap into the new barrel, this will mean you will still have the same key for the door and ignition. ;)

why is this a failier? does anyone know. not that it effects me but i fail to see why this is a safety issue, unless it may lock while your driving, but then it could just be removed and as the tester cant take things apart they have to assume that this is the case, i would think :? can the ignition simply be swapped for a push button, then what? is it just me or does this not sound daft. :?

ok i had a dig around and came up with the answer, apparetly its imposed by brussels and only effects cars that are built/used after 1st september 2001, so your safe :D

copied from the mot forum-
See section 2.1 of the MOT inspection manual ,
its acceptable to remove a steering lock if another means of immobilisation is fitted, which could mean almost anything from a hidden switch to jacking up the car and taking a wheel with you...we have to give you the benefit of the doubt

Sorry guy's I hadn't checked this thread after si import replied with his offer of the replacement barrel (Thanks mate - arrived very quick, well packed and is now garnishing my steering column!)

Essentially, "..if your vehicle has a steering lock fitted, it has to work.." so I'm told..

@vtecmec - I would have tried that, but I already knacked 1 ignition lock trying to remove it, I thought it best to admit I'm a ham fisted baboon with a box of hammers and have 2 keys for the car instead!

@ littlefella - Interesting.. By interesting, I obviously mean f*cking maddening - I'll mention that to the halfwits I took the car to have it MOT'd and see what they have to say.. I'll take 1 of my hammers with me as well!
