Open pitlane is the best format. As per previous comments you just go out when you like, usually 20 cars maximum on track at any one time and you're never really queuing for more than a few minutes at most. The most time you spend off track is when people are red flagged for breaking down usually, or the odd spin/crash at quarry for those who are really driving well beyond their abilities.
You can really stay out as long as you like, I tend to do 15-20 laps in a session if I can but most usually do around 10. It's often quieter in the afternoon as a few people have left from breakdowns and others start leaving at 15:00-16:00 as they have had their fill for the day.
Really friendly atmosphere there as well. I was chatting with several different people and finding out about their cars and what circuits they recommend. Open pitlane also means you can be overtaking little hatchbacks and commuter cars then getting passed by Caterhams, Impreza's, Maserati's and other exotica.
Makes for a really exiting day and your driving skills will improve massively as you get a proper feel for what it's like to drive at the limit and how the tyres react.
