Might not sit well with the Insurers if the PS is disconnected and an accident happens.

Checking online, opinion seems divided about whether bypassing the cooler is a good idea. I'm hoping I won't need to run the car for more than about an hour at a time (SIlverstone is about 45 minutes from me) and I reckon I can keep the usage down to about 3 or 4 hours over the next three weeks.

New pipes have been ordered which will be in in 2-3 week's time. £300. Hooray! :(

I had the same problem with my car last year. Whilst an engine oil leak was being investigated, the garage spotted that one of the two vertical metal pipes was leaking. Simple fix: bypass the corroded metal pipes with a rubber hose. Cut the metal pipe neat the PAS reservoir and cut it near the PAS cooler then bypass the corroded parts with a rubber hose. Simples. Only one of the two pipes was leaking last year but I can see corrosion on the still functional pipe. As it's only a matter of time before that gives up, I'm gonna bypass it, and remove most of the pipes in the process. Oh, and the rubber pipe has gotta be fuel / brake fluid / whatever resistant.

Have a read of a thread I posted called Project EX, 2.0i 5TH Gen. My ex had a power steering pipe gone. I fitted an oil cooler from a focus diesel.

Yeah I couldn't get a Prelude cooler as they no longer make them and it seemed pointless to buy a 20 year old one off eBay which probably wouldn't be in any better shape. I bought a generic cooler by Mishimoto which has been working fine since it went on in early 2017 but the original pipes the cooler is connected too were obviously very corroded too and they have finally got to the stage now where there's no good pipe left to attach it to.

I've got the replacement part on order but in the meantime the pipe has just been looped back so as to bypass the cooler altogether. I have pottered about without any ill effects and it will hopefully be OK tomorrow. After that I'll lay the car up for a few weeks until the new pipes are fitted. As long as I don't start doing doughnuts or something all will hopefully be fine. At least it's not going to be really warm tomorrow or anything...
