Gearbox cleanup and paint

Post by Vtecmec » Sun Jan 06, 2013 5:29 pm

Thanks gents for the comments.

I've not been able to get much done over the christmas period, but I did pick up a gearbox from secla (thanks) on new years eve. It'll be a good replacement from the 2.0 box I currently have.

It functions fine but looks a little grubby.

Image

Image

So I degreased it twice…

Image

Then hit it with a wire brush on a drill.

Base coat.

And top coat.

More floor paint, slam panel paint, sump and oil cooler

Post by Vtecmec » Sun Mar 24, 2013 8:27 pm

Cheers guys.

OK, so I'm really keen to see the roads this summer, but if I carry on the way I’ve been going It’ll be September 2017 by the time I’m done.

So I've temporarily de-scoped the project to get on the roads.

The gearbox and front suspension will go into storage until a later date; I’m just going to get it all back together as best I can and as soon as I can.

This way I can use it over the summer, and then over the winter next year remove the engine and front suspension, de-rust paint and refit, well, that’s the plan anyway.

So I finished the gearbox off anyway.

Image

Now, the engine is leaking a bit of oil from the bottom end, so that’ll need doing before going on the road. The leaks are coming from the sump gasket and the oil cooler gasket.

So off with the sump.

Image

Which looks pretty grotty so I cleaned it up and removed the rust. Removing the gasket took a while, it was so far gone that it was no longer pliable and just broke off in sections.

Image

Image

And painted with engine enamel.

Image

Now onto the oil cooler.

Off with the oil filter.

Image

Next remove the 30mm bolt from the centre of the cooler.

Image

And pull the cooler away.

Image

Getting the seal out was tricky and I had to chop it with a blade in the end.

Image

New seal.

Image

And all back in place.

Image

I finished painting some of the front underside bits that I had previously de-rusted.

Image

And then fitted along with the sump.

Image

The old ARB was pretty knackered, so I fitted my refurbed one, with some new droplinks that I also painted.

Image

And in its place.

Image

Now onto the slam panel. A bit of colour.

Image

And some lacquer.

Image

Back on with the vin plate.

Image

And the bonnet catch.

Image

I’d sourced some replacement nostrils which were rusting a little, so they’ve been sorted and painted, but still need some colour at the front.

Image

The floor is almost there, the rear exhaust shield that I had was beyond saving, once derusted there were more holes than metal, so I bought a spanking new one.

Image

Only £20 from Honda.

The floor has moved on a bit too, here you can see some primed and some part cleaned.

Image

Almost there with this bit.

Image

Epoxy mastic.

Image

And seam sealed.

Image

Just needs some stone chip and cavity wax now.

The pressure is on again now, as I’ve just had an offer accepted on a house, so could be moving house pretty soon.

More soon.

Great work as always.

Can you do my sump too!

Great finish on the slam panel, was that from some aerosol cans? 8)
Also what's that green gunk under the rubber bungs you've reinstalled?

Nice find on that heatshield too.
