BB1 Compression Test Results

Post by vanzep » Fri Jun 29, 2018 5:01 pm

so after checking the compression was ok - i rechecked the dizzy timing and it was too advanced and causing a loss of power.
ive timed it by ear this time :)

next week i will be getting some help investigating where the dipped beam has gone on my headlights and then if that goes ok then i might push ahead and get the timing belt done:?
there also seems to be a very slight coolant loss so will be trying to trace that as well (coolant pipe under the dizzy looks a bit suspect). ive replaced that part on my BB4 with a part from Gates which fitted spot on but i had to get in from the USA as Honda dont do this part anymore.

Edit:Gates Part number 18999

Same pipe on mine split last year, I was able to cut it back about 2" and refit, but ordered the same one as you so have that for as and when. Was pleasantly surprised at the price too!

cutting the pipe back only works for a while and most of the pipe seems to go like sticky mush - i will also replace the two short coolant pipes that go to the oil cooler as they can leak as well - i guess any hose or rubber pipe that gets covered in oil over many years will eventually give up :)

got the car booked in with indigolemon to sort out the headlights
my thinking being if he can fix an old Atari PC then he can fix the BB1 :P

Ah man, you can't confuse Atari and Amiga, that's a playground fight right there :D

But yeah, lets see if we can get these lights working!

It sure is...

I didn't realise just how closely related they are though - didn't realise the ST was actually based on a licensed version of the chips originally developed for the miggie.

Ah man, now you've made me type out a long boring post  Apologies to Vanzep for spamming your profile ...

[ boring bit for most people ]

In the beginning Amiga Corporation was a separate company entirely, nothing to do with Atari or Commodore, and they had a problem. As a small startup with lofty goals, they needed money to develop the machine they wanted to make. They managed to get pretty far, but as always the funding only went so far, so they approached Atari. Atari gave them a loan to get them to completion, with the caveat that while Amiga would make the computer, Atari would have access to the chipset to enable them to make games consoles using it. The kicker was that if for whatever reason Amiga Corporation couldn't repay the loan by a certain time, Atari got everything.

Meanwhile, a man called Jack Tramiel who was formally the CEO of Commodore, was ousted from the company by the board, who had fallen out with his management style. He had a lot of employee loyalty, and as a result took a lot of the engineers with him, and using his business smarts - managed to buy Atari from Time Warner for a small sum (the rumour is $1), as the company wanted shot of their video games side. He got his engineers to work, and they quickly, using off the shelf parts, put together what became the Atari ST.

This meant Commodore had just lost a lot of their engineering talent, so needed something - and they also found Amiga. They bought the whole company, and gave them the money to pay back the Atari loan. This was a bit dubious legally, and caused a lawsuit that lasted for quite a few years!

But at the end of the day, the only thing that the Amiga and Atari shared, was the processor (the Motorola 68000).

Re: BB1 Headlights fixed

Post by vanzep » Sat Jul 07, 2018 2:42 pm

thanks to indigolemon i have headlights back on the BB1.
the earth for the dipped beams had dissapeared :? so a new one put in place on the driver side connector and lights are back on. Every other electrical items works spot on so just odd to lose just the dipped beam.
Ive cleaned up all lot of bad connections and earths recently but there must one that still needs done......
I had to do the same thing on the BB4 a few years ago but the earth reappeared recently so hoping the same happens with this one. :)
