So last Saturday after 12 months of not driving a prelude I finally went and looked at one here in Aus..

First impressions from the ad on gumtree was great, totally original, clean and tidy H23 4g so I got on the phone and arranged to look at it. When I got there on the Saturday I quickly realised it was not quite as clean as I thought and after a good look over and a quick drive I had found a number of issues...

There is a few dents and rust spots on the body
The air con doesn't work
The 4ws light is on and doesn't work
There is a rather bad oil leak
The interior is grubby
The rev needle sticks
And both front tyres are worn on the inner edges

So after this I was going to walk away and forget it but then I thought about the way it drove, it was good, felt tight for the k's and the engine pulled better than I was expecting so I thought I'd just give him an offer of 1000 under the original asking price and see what he said... Straight away he replied with a yes and there was no negotiation needed 8-)

So I gave 1500 dollars for it with a road worthy certificate which was important as I needed another car to drive straight away...

There was me thinking they would all be rust free over here

Anyway took it for a good spin today, didn't miss a beat and still a good laugh to drive on the twisty stuff so happy enough so far..

Friday I had a look at some of the issues, started with air con which I gased up and traced the fault to a sticky relay and possibly a leak somewhere.
4ws randomly started working briefly but now there's no relays clicking in the back again so I'm thinking there's some dodgy connections there.
Fitted some new wipers.
Found the front park/side lights and 1 number plate lights are out but I've ordered
some LED's.
Also took the big gay number plate surround of the front.

Excellent news, well done 8-)
Yep, you don't get the vtec fun win that engine, but it is still an excellent engine with plenty of pull - I liked mine.

Car needs a bit of work (interior needs a good clean! :puke: ) but pretty good all round I would say - wish my engine bay was that good!

Re:4ws, pull the fault codes as the starting point.
If your abs is working OK, then from your fault symptoms my guess will be it needs the internal resoldering trick, but we can confirm that from the codes.

Cheers Wurl, yeah it's not quite like the bb4 in that respect but maybe one day I will chuck a VTEC lump in it ;) .
it really does need a proper wet vax and the interior pulling out to do it..

How do you get the codes out? Is it like the civics with the paperclip jobby?
I have heard they suffer from solder joints in the 4ws ecru or something :?

Yes, 2 pin service connector by the drivers left foot, under the radio. Short that (with a decent bit of wire) turn the ignition on and see what it gives you.
It's all explained in the service manual.

Looks pretty good and all these cars need something mechanical or aesthetically, small rust spots are easily done, looks overall very clean though and good $$'s too for it.
You seem on have a grasp on the job at hand already!
Those front reg plate holders are hideous though, waiting to get my front off the Bb2 to dispose of it,but contemplating cutting it up to jap size or smaller which will be hidden by the plate anyway.
Nice to see another member on here flashing Qld reg plates though, comradery at last on this forum

Cheers mate, hah yeah I'm on the case 8-).
Do you go to many Honda or Jap car meets locally @Greg-SiR?

I read my flash codes today for the 4ws, came up as code 11 from what I can make out that's "sub steering angle sensor R" which I'm thinking is the rear steering angle sensor and that's about as far as my knowledge goes on that one, I'm thinking it's probably not a sensor at fault but more likely a connection issue... If anyone can shed some light on this would be ever grateful :D

There are 2 steering sensors, one on the rack itself and one in the steering column.

The service manual has all the fault finding guides for each of the codes, but as first thoughts from me...

Is the front steering set up properly? (Steering wheel straight when the wheels are straight?)
Provided that is all OK, might be worth doing a steering neutral reset (or whatever its called again - I forget the exact name for the procedure, but it's in the service manual.) Involves some bits of tape, a coat hanger and steering wheel twiddling...

ok so ive found the service manual on the net here http://prelude.openbarr.com/manuals/4th_gen/ but theres no index and alot of pages, tried searching the web for the 4ws section but still not found it :|

on the front steering situation i havnt tried to wheel align it yet as i wanted to get the 4ws working and figure out where the locking pin goes and all that but the steering is out when driving but i put that down to the rear wheels being slightly out also as it does crab abit

EDIT: ive managed to find the 4ws section on page 648 and after a quick read of how it actually works, i think you could be onto something with the steering being out at he front Wurly, as the two steering angle sensors probably arent seeing the same angles if the trackings out... but why am i getting a rear angle sensor faultcode?
